Comparing the Experts (A.L.)

Howard wanted to know how the average salary was derived for the series of articles I just completed recapping 2010.

The salary column is a combination of three expert leagues: the League of Alternate Baseball Reality (LABR), Tout Wars, and the CBS Analysts League.

As I've pointed out before, the CBS league spends more on the top players than LABR and Tout Wars. How much more they spend is worthy of review.

All three leagues are 12-team, A.L.-only 5x5 start-over leagues with $260 team budgets and 14 hitting spots to fill. But each league spends its money very differently. CBS averages $37 for its 12 most expensive hitters (Tier #1), LABR $33 per hitter, and Tout Wars a skimpy $31 per hitter.

When you consider that the 12 best auctioned hitters in 2009 earned $368, then Tout Wars suddenly looks sensible and CBS looks foolish. Outside of Joe Mauer's $45 price, there isn't a particular bid that looks bad, but across the board there is too much money being spent on the top hitters. They can't earn this much, and even though the 12 best hitters in 2010 rally (earning $400), CBS still looks like it's out to lunch.
The party for CBS isn't just limited to its 12 most expensive hitters, though. Tiers 2-3 still see some pretty aggressive spending and CBS manages to keep up with the other expert leagues until Tier 7. Tiers 7-10 (the 85th through 120th most expensive players in each league) are where CBS finally has to run out of steam since they do have a salary cap.

There isn't nearly the same level of enthusiasm or excitement on the pitching side for the CBS bidders. They actually bid a little more aggressively on the second tier pitchers, but a less than $2 difference per pitcher isn't something that makes you sit up and take notice. LABR's Tier #4 bid is probably the one thing that jumps out at me; it seems that at this point in their auction a few owners were pushing hard to fill out their staffs before the fall out to Tier 5 - where the $6-7 pitchers reside - happened.

Any chance you can post a 4th column, "Earned $".

Since all 3 share the same league rules, this seems like a legit comparision.
