N.L. Gearing Up: July 9-15

Rising Up
Ben Sheets (2% owned last week; 6% owned this week)
Can Ben Sheets contribute to your fantasy team this year? That's a question that would have seemed farcical in May; right now it seems pretty realistic that Sheets could slot in as a mid-tier N.L.-only starting pitcher if everything works out. He's only had one rehab start so far, but reports from that start were encouraging. Sheets could be in the Braves rotation by next weekend after the All-Star Break. We all know the injury risk with Sheets, but a $5-10 bid - depending on your team's situation - isn't out of line by any means.

In the Minors
Starling Marte
With the recent demotion of Jose Tabata, speculation has naturally turned to the possible call-up of Starling Marte. The Pirates say that they're not going to call Marte up just yet, but a number of prospect watchers think that Marte is ready now and that he might force the Pirates hand. I look at the numbers and while they're very good I do see the low walk rate as a possible red flag. Marte could provide 10/20 HR/SB numbers but with a .230-.240 batting average. He's an obvious add if he's called up, but I'd be reluctant to place a big fat bid in non-keeper formats.
