Steven Strasberg and TINSTAAPP

The questions haven't come yet but they will.

How much should I bid on Ariel Prieto? How good will Ariel Prieto be? How much will Ariel Prieto's stats be worth? Should I trade Frank Thomas straight up for Ariel Prieto?

Wait, what?

You're forgiven if you don't remember Ariel Prieto. He was a Cuban pitching phenomenon in the mid-1990s who flopped his first season and never really panned out. He certainly had his moments, but he didn't pan out.

And yes, I know, Strasberg is a college trained pitcher while Prieto is a Cuban import. It is a totally unfair comparison.

I bring Prieto up not because I think Strasberg is Prieto, but because there is a good chance Strasberg, too, won't live up to the initial hype.

Pitcher A: 186 IP, 17-9, 3.63 ERA, 1.328 WHIP, 124 K
Pitcher B: 180 1/3 IP, 17-5, 4.39 ERA, 1.353 WHIP, 171 K
Pitcher C: 107 2/3 IP, 6-7, 4.10 ERA, 1.272 WHIP, 113 K

These are the first full season stats for three established pitchers who were taken in the first found of the amateur draft. Pitcher A is Justin Verlander. Pitcher B is CC Sabathia. Pitcher C is Josh Beckett.

I include these three examples because these are some pretty successful Major League debuts. In the harsh world of Rotisserie, though, this isn't worth blowing all of your FAAB or trading an arm and a leg to get Strasberg.

Hey Mike, how goes it? Just wondering what your thoughts might be on picking up John Ely? Would you drop Tim Hudson for him if Ks and Ws are weak? Thanks much.

Better examples would be #1 overall pick college pitchers. David Price, Luke Hochevar, Bryan Bullington, Matt Anderson, Kris Benson, Paul Wilson, Ben McDonald, Andy Benes. Yes, even the college pitchers over the past 2 decades have not been what they were expected to be.

Few even had solid careers.

Jumping over to the hitting side:
Ken Griffey Jr., Chipper Jones, Phil Nevin, ARod, Darren Erstad, Pat Burrell, Josh Hamilton, Adrian Gonzalez, Joe Mauer, Delmon Young, Justin Upton, Tim Beckham.

There are at least 3 locks for the HOF in this group and another group of all stars and MVPs. Quite a different look.

Take the hitter.

Hey Gypsy - I'll write something up on Ely tonight/tomorrow. He's definitely worth a look.
