NL Free Agent Supplemental - Ike Davis

Well, that did not take long...expecting to be in the Buffalo lineup today at 1:05 p.m., Ike Davis instead gets to call dad and say: can I get to NY in less than 5 hours from here?

The promotion of Ike Davis is a no-lose proposition for the Mets. Mike Jacobs lost his job and Fernando Tatis might lose some ABs...not a terrible loss. Of course, Jerry Manuel might lose his job, but that almost seems inevitable. But what can we expect from Davis this year, and what should we bid?

Davis struggles with left-handed pitching (albeit a small sample size). He strikes out a lot. His BABIP last year was .381. I think it is safe to say that Davis will not hit for a tremendously high average, at least at first. His power, however, appears to be for real, and his growing patience at the plate will allow him to see more pitches to drive. His glove is pretty good, and, barring a complete collapse, he will likely play out the entire year. I'm guessing at least 400 plate appearances (assuming he gets a seat against really tough left-handed pitchers).

Keeper league owners are going to have a tough time pricing Davis against competitors who need help now. Given that a lot of potential impact minor league prospects don't appear to be on the fast track this year (Posey, Morrison, Stanton, et al.), Davis is going to be one of the best incoming players (without predicting trade deadline trades, of course), and you will get almost an entire season of ABs. My bid on Davis is $14-$15, but that isn't going to get him. If you want him, I think you'll need to go a minimum of $22, but it is more than likely he'll go in the $25-$28 range.
