A.L. FAAB Log: April 12, 2010

Welcome back to the FAAB logs. For the benefit of my new readers, I'll give a brief rundown.

This is a review of my regular A.L. (4x4, 12-teams, $100 budget, $1 minimum bid) and its FAAB activity. It is a keeper league, so as the season goes along there is some strategy that goes beyond simply budgeting your FAAB. Included are the winning bid and all of the losing bids.

The league is a non-Vickrey league.

Darren Oliver $2.
Darren O'Day $1.

Frank Francisco's early struggles (he's having problems locating his fastball) have led to some speculation on his possible/potential short-term replacement. Neftali Feliz will be the first guy to get the ball, but Oliver and O'Day might also get some opportunities, particularly if there are saves to be had on back-to-back days. I think the Rangers really want Francisco to succeed, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility that he's hurt. I don't see Oliver or O'Day closing, but when it comes to closers-in-waiting, stranger things have happened.

Joaquin Arias $1.
If you own Ian Kinsler, you might as well pick up Arias this week. Rotoworld's prognosis for Kinsler is gloomier than the Star Telegram's, but Kinsler's most optimistic ETA at this point is April 20. Arias hasn't done much with the bat in the minors, but his SB% has been strong the last two years in Oklahoma City, and he might be good for some bags while manning 2B for the Rangers.

Austin Kearns $1.
Kearns picked up a couple of starts this week, but I wouldn't read too much into it...managers typically try to rotate every bench player in more in the first couple of weeks than they do later in the season. I suppose Kearns could work his way into some playing time if Michael Brantley struggles and if Russ Branyan isn't ready, but it seems like there are too many ifs with Kearns. Add that to the 305 and 316 SLG percentages he's put up the last two years and it seems like there's no upside with Kearns.

Jesse Crain $1.
Jon Rauch's early performance has cemented him as the Twins closer in the early going, but Crain's strong start has perhaps moved him up in the Twins pecking order should something happen to Rauch. I haven't seen Crain pitch yet, but scouting reports are positive. He's worth a throw at $1 in 4x4 and maybe even in 5x5.
