Free Talent Review: American League

Thought I'd revisit Eugene's comment from back in May. We were discussing Willie Bloomquist, and Eugene's argument was that Bloomquist was just as valuable in the OF as he was at middle infield.

A.L. Free Agent Hitters BABG

Twenty-five dollars doesn't sound like a lot, but in terms of the amount of free talent that's available, it's not even close.

The hitters at the top of the spectrum were mostly OF eligible as well. Adam Kennedy ($20) is the best A.L. free agent to date, but after that you have to get past Scott Podsednik ($20), Nolan Reimold ($15), Willie Bloomquist ($15), and Clete Thomas ($8) to get to Ramon Santiago ($6). There's nothing wrong with Santiago - and I'm sure a lot of his owners in A.L.-only leagues have appreciated his contributions - but you're far more likely to get a bigger FA boost in the OF than you are at any other position.

What did surprise me a little was the complete lack of corner infielders. In leagues without farm systems, Gordon Beckham ($15) provides more free agent value than everyone else on this list. If you bought Jose Bautista and Kevin Millar at your auction (as one owner did in mine), the free agent pool wasn't where you were finding a superior replacement.

Interesting Post.

Got a good idea for a post:

I'm challenging for a title in my AL-only league and going through the final round of dump trading so the final 4 (of 12) perfect their teams for the last two months.

There's a line of thought that the players to target are those who will be in 'pennant' races, as they'll be playing every day. In the process, Id avoid guys on teams who are more likely to sit regulars (especially hurt regulars) to see what their farm system's made of. For example, I can do a deal for (an expiring) Grady Sizemore (giving up a good Hochevar contract). I can probably give up the same asset and get a Jeter. What's the play here? What can I expect from Sizemore the rest of the way. And, am I right to expect that Jeter will get 60 more at bats than Sizemore the rest of the way? (translating into 25 more runs, etc)
