FAAB Log Supplemental: July 7, 2008

Reid Brignac
With Jason Bartlett hitting the DL, the Rays have decided that their pennant race is more important than preserving valuable service time, and have brought up Brignac to share SS with Ben Zobrist until Barlett comes back. This will probably be a short-term move, though I could see the argument for keeping Brignac in the line-up after Barlett comes back. I know that Brignac only has a 743 OPS for AAA Durham. But Barlett's sub-600 OPS in the majors has been even worse, MLE or no. Brignac's also a 22-year-old kid in AAA, not a 24-year-old, and has to be cut a little slack for that. It doesn't matter what I think, though. I suspect Bartlett gets his job back once he's ready to go. In non-keeper leagues, a very conservative $3 bid. In keeper leagues, you'll want to go somewhere between $10-12. I think Brignac gets a clean shot at the job next year, and is similar to Evan Longoria, in that the talent sometimes outweighs the minor league stats.

Joe Koshansky
Koshansky's up while Todd Helton slowly nurses his sore back to full health. Unlike the Rays, the Rockies aren't in a race this year, so they'll probably let Koshansky play 1B almost exclusively while Helton is out. He projects as a 15-20 HR power hitter with poor batting averages as a regular, but is worth a moderate bid of $4 as a short-term pick up. Keep in mind that Koshansky's 26 years old; he hardly projects as a prospect anymore.

Steven Pearce
Pearce is on the Pirates active roster, but it's hard to see an opportunity open up for him without an injury or a trade. The touts have been high on this guy in the past, but he's now a 25 year old who was having a poor AAA campaign. He also looks like a $3 player, and even keeper leagues might want to be conservative with their bids. Pearce isn't guaranteed anything going forward.

Chris Volstad
Volstad got called up today by the Marlins. Rotoworld speculates he'll start out in the bullpen and move to the rotation. He knows how to pitch, but his velocity is still in the high 80s/low 90s. He's a severe ground ball pitcher this year (2.9 G/F), and hasn't allowed a HR in AA this year. He's only 21, though, so I think he'll take his lumps this time around. Bid $2.
