FAAB Log Supplemental: July 13, 2008

Homer Bailey
Rotoworld is really, really down on this guy. But I think we all need to take a step back from the ledge and take a closer look at Bailey's numbers. His K/IP at Louisville is comparable to last year's numbers at the same level. The HR/IP are higher, but not significantly so. The only number that's definitively worse is his H/IP. Hits per innings pitched could mean that Bailey's been less effective, but it could also mean he's been a little unlucky. 93 2/3 IP is probably too small of a sample size to say. That doesn't mean that Bailey's a good bet for this year, but it does mean that he's a 22-year old phenom whose stock shouldn't be as diminished as some in the Roto community say it is. He's worth a $15 bid in long-term leagues, probably $7 or $8 in non-keeper leagues. I still like Bailey long-term, though it's starting to look like he's going to have make some minor to moderate adjustments to be the major league stud everyone thought he'd be. I still think he'll be a #3 or #4 starter even if he doesn't make those adjustments.

Jaime Garcia

John Sickels' analysis is so superb that I often feel embarassed to put my two cents in after he's written such a great piece. He's a Grade B prospect who just turned 22 years old earlier this month. He could use a full season in AAA. The Cardinals are going to start him next Sunday against the Pirates. He's on a good team so at the very least he could be a decent wins play. I'll give him a $9 bid, with the caveat that there are a lot of positive and negative possibilities for a pitcher this raw who, according to the best or one of the best minor league analysts in the business, has probably been rushed.

Chad Reineke

Reineke is probably more of a non-prospect than not. He's 26 years old, and was a C+ pitcher for John Sickels in the 2006-2007 off-season before falling off of the radar this past off-season entirely. He was a starter in AAA before his call-up, but is a long shot to get starts for the Astros, even with their woes at the back of the rotation.
No bid.
