Trading & The Culture of Dumping

With little over a month left before the major league non-waiver trade deadline, we're starting to see the first articles about possible trade candidates in major league baseball. Matthew Pouliot, probably one of the best writers at Rotoworld, chimed in yesterday with his take on pitchers who could move.

In Rotisserie, we conduct a similar analysis in late June. Chances are that anywhere from 2-3 teams have already packed it in in your league at this point. Typically, these are the squads that were weakest from the outset, so they often don't have a lot to give up, or the marquee players that they do have to surrender are risky or on the downslope of their careers.

The teams that interest us, then, are the squads that are floating around in the high 40s or low 50s (in 4x4) and are trying to decide what to do. Obviously, this depends on what the top of the league looks like as well. A league where the top team has 65 points will see more teams sticking around for as long as possible, while a league where the leader has 75 or more points makes it harder to justify hanging around in an effort to squeak into a 4th place finish.

I've spent a lot of time (some would say way too much time) discussing theory in the past couple of weeks, but I'd like to get back to the more practical business of discussing day-to-day operations of your franchises. Is there a "right" time to pack it in? Is there a certain etiquette to dumping? Is there a better way to plan for these types of trades? Hopefully, I'll get to the heart of some of these issues in my next few posts.

I spent too much time yesterday trying to make the decision whether to dump or not.

Using my projection spreadsheet, I discovered I could gain nearly 10 points in ERA/WHIP if I got rid of my worst 2 starting pitchers and replaced them with middle relievers from my reserve. The wins cost is likely to be only a couple of points.

Addition by subtraction: it's the easiest way to gain roto points in mid-summer!
