Last week, Logan was nuked for Greg Dobbs. This move kind of made sense, as Logan wasn't playing, seemed to be battling for a mystery ailment and, most importantly, wasn't playing. $13 might be a high bid, but Logan is fast and has a track record of running when he plays (23 SB in 322 AB in 2005 for the Tigers). He stole two bases today, and I'm a little surprised more teams didn't bid on him given his history. He should start playing more now that his shoulder is better, and is worth owning in N.L. leagues.
Mark Reynolds $3. Other bids $1, $1
This is a fine short-term pick-up while Chad Tracy is out, as Reynolds has played started five straight days now, and looks to get almost all the time while Tracy's on the shelf. Reynolds' projects out as a power bat, albeit one with a low average. Reynolds is someone who the scouts cannot seem to agree on. John Sickels, for example, only gave Reynolds a C+, mainly because his defense, but seems to think that Reynolds will eventually settle in as a utility player. CBS Sportsline, on the other hand, calls Reynolds a "top prospect." I'm closer to agreement with Sickels on this one. It would be hard not to get excited by Reynolds' awesome minor league line last year, but he was a college kid in high A-ball in his third minor league season. I'd go a little higher on Reynolds if you want him, but keep all of this in perspective.
Angel Pagan $3. Other bids $1, $1
Pagan's early hot start is a fluke but, like Reynolds, he has to be owned while he's playing and performing as well as he has. Pagan is an ex-Mets farmhand with a good amount of speed and not much else. For a projected lead-off hitter, he struck out too much in the minors and didn't walk enough. This bid is probably about right; I could see Pagan slumping as quickly as he's been hot and then getting sent back down. His three strikeouts in 26 major league AB this year might be Pagan's flukiest stat of all. He misses pitches a lot.
Carlos Marmol $2. Other bids $1, $1.
I'm sure Marmol got three bids because of the odd report from the Chicago Sun-Times yesterday that Carlos Marmol was going to take over the closer's role in Chicago and Ryan Dempster was going to moved into the rotation. Now it doesn't look like that will happen and Marmol will stay in middle relief. I've heard really good things about Marmol. He's a converted catcher who some say has nasty, nasty stuff, and his 3.95 ERA at Triple-A Iowa this year masks a 10.54 K/9 ratio and a .204 BA against. Marmol might not have a ton of Roto value this year, but nothing wrong with stashing him on your roster as your 9th pitcher for on the cheap.
Tony Gwynn Jr. $1. Other bid $1
No, this isn't a misprint. Gwynn was FAABed last week, replacing Jeremy Hermida. Hermida came back this week, so Gwynn was immediately waived. This league has daily transactions for players coming off the DL and for trades, so it is possible to see a player FAABed two weeks running.
Micah Bowie $1
For some reason, I'm reminded of this great exchange from the movie Anchorman.
Ron Burgundy: Brick, where did you get a hand grenade?Seeing Micah Bowie get picked up at $1 after he got bombed in his spot start today against the Orioles today is inexplicable, which made me feel like Ron Burgundy when he noticed Brick with that hand grenade. Bowie was certainly serviceable out of the pen this year, but there's nothing in his track record or his role to make me think he should be owned in any league anywhere. But why after his bad start? Looking at all of this is giving me an ice cream headache.
Brick Tamland: I don't know.
Adam Eaton $1. Other bid $1
I went to the Phillies game against the Brewers last week and saw Eaton pitch and then watched most of his game today against the Blue Jays on TV. I don't like Eaton but I have to admit I was impressed with both outings, and don't think he was just lucky. His flyball rate today was still a concern...the ball will fly out of that park for Eaton when it gets hot in Philly, no matter what he's doing differently. But Eaton is worth riding while he's got the hot hand and that line-up behind him.
Ron Belliard $1. Other bid $1
You can put me in the camp that believes the Nationals are better off with Belliard at 2B, Felipe Lopez at SS, and Cristian Guzman as far away from the ballpark as possible. However, Belliard's performance as a part-timer certainly hasn't won him consideration for it. He probably needs a trade, but if he isn't good enough to start for Washington, where the hell is he going to go?
Daryle Ward $1
With Derrek Lee back in the line-up, this bid is a waste. Ward's OPS is certainly solid this year, but he's barely playing.
Jon Coutlangus $1
A serviceable middleman for the Reds who will keep a major league job for many years as a LOOGY.
Brad Hennessey $1
He's probably next in line if Armando Benitez falters. Benitez is the National League version of Todd Jones. People will talk forever about how he's going to lose the job, but his fat contract pretty much ensures he won't. I still like Hennessey for a roster spot, though.
Jamey Carroll $1
He had a 496 OPS entering today's action. He got a hit today, but I somehow don't think that makes him worth owning. I'm thinking about Brick and the hand grenade again.
