A.L. FAAB Log: May 31, 2010

Joaquin Benoit $10. Other bids $2, $1, $1, $1.
The multitude of bids made me go check on the health of Rafael Soriano (he's fine). Benoit has been lights out for the Rays since they called him up from Durham. Obviously, the .124 BABIP is unsustainable, but his performance has moved him further up in the set-up pecking order, and it wouldn't surprise me to see him close if something happened to Soriano. With the whiffs, he's worthy even in 5x5.

Julio Lugo $4.
The combination of Luke Scott's day-to-day injury and Garrett Atkins' ineffectiveness has opened the door for playing time for Lugo at 2B. He doesn't have an extra-base hit this season, and his value is pretty much limited to his base stealing. If you're desperate for steals he's worth a stab, but don't be surprised if the O's simply cut Lugo loose at some point.

David Purcey $1.
A one-time prospect for the Blue Jays, a logjam of starting pitchers has pushed Purcey into middle relief. The Jays called him up last Monday. He was on a strong streak at AAA, but the high walk total concerns me. He'll have some value if he throws strikes, but there's the rub.

Wilson Betemit $1.
Betemit was once a somewhat promising infielder, but the Royals called him up mostly to fill in and provide depth. He wasn't doing much in the minors and you shouldn't expect much from him now either.

Shelley Duncan $1. Other bid $1.
Duncan was putting up solid numbers at AAA, so the scuffling Indians rewarded him with a call-up. He could push his way into some playing time with a hot performance, but he'll be battling both Matt LaPorta and Austin Kearns (who has done surprisingly well) for playing time. Unless the Indians option LaPorta, I don't see Duncan's power translating into a decent play in the short-term.

Kevin Russo $1.
Russo is a solid/scrappy type who profiles as a utility guy. He might squeeze some starts out in the OF against LHP if Joe Girardi wakes up and smells the coffee on Curtis Granderson, but it's more likely that Russo is a defensive replacement and infrequent starter. He has a little speed, but the poor SB/CS in the minors won't translate well to the bigs.

Mike McCoy $1.
McCoy's biggest baseball asset is his versatility. His biggest Roto asset is speed, but his four SB don't makes up for his other dreadful numbers. McCoy is probably the last man off of the bench for Toronto and - even for us serious players - likely not worth a throw.

Robb Quinlan $1.
With Kendry Morales' surreal injury, Quinlan will at the very least get some of the starts at 1B, at least for now. He's got some power, but he hasn't posted an SLG north of 400 since way back in 2006. He's stretched as a full-timer, but I could see him hitting 10-12 HR if he did manage to play every day.

Craig Breslow $1.
Breslow has been great out of the pen this year for the A's. He probably doesn't have a chance at saves, but is worth owning, particularly in 4x4 leagues. Something to watch for is his lefty/righty splits. Traditionally, Breslow has been equally effective against both, but this year the left-handed has played much more like a typical LOOGY.

Scott Feldman. Claimed by 9th place team.
I wrote about Feldman here. He pitches at the White Sox this week; the Cell isn't necessarily a great place to grab Feldman if you're hoping for a turnaround.
