N.L. FAAB Log: August 10, 2009

Trent Oeltjen $7. Other bid $1.
Oeltjen was a fringe prospect for the Twins before the Diamondbacks picked him up heading into the 2008 campaign. Predictably, his numbers got the PCL boost and Oeltjen posted decent power/speed numbers in AAA. He's smacked two HR since his call-up for the injured Justin Upton and should keep getting solid playing time until Upton returns. He's not much of a prospect, though, and long-term projects as a 4th OF at best.

Jhoulys Chacin $5. Other bids $1, $1.
Chacin has put up some solid numbers out of the pen for the Rockies thus far. The problem for us is that the Rox are babying him and he hasn't pitched much. This is the right move for them, but it tempers Chacin's value for us quite a bit and still makes him mostly a long-term play.

Kenshin Kawakami $3. Other bids $2, $2, $2, $1.
Kawakami was dropped last week in favor of Cliff Lee. This is what often happens in deep leagues with a dump culture; a player like Kawakami who should be owned in all leagues gets dropped if his owner can't find a trading partner. He's put up some solid numbers on the whole, though his high BB/IP and HR/IP mean that while Kawakami is going to be up and down all year he's not a likely candidate to put up ace-like numbers down the stretch.

Wladimier Balentien $3. Other bids $2, $1.
Balentien looks like he might have picked up a regular starting gig for the Reds at Laynce NIx's expense. He's worth a stab in N.L.-only leagues if he's starting, though historically his high K/AB rates have led to poor batting averages and an eventual loss of said PT. He's put up decent K/AB and K/BB rates so far for Cincy (in an admittedly limited sample size) so this bears watching to see if Balentien can turn a corner. He's still young as far as his future chances go.

Fred Lewis $2.
Like Kawakami, Lewis was a victim of last week's rich bounty of talent coming over from the A.L. He started both games for the Giants this weekend, but it's unclear whether or not Lewis is going to start going forward or split PT down the stretch. Lewis hasn't run enough to be valuable even if he isn't hitting and he simply hasn't hit this year. He's a good play if you need something better than a warm body, but is a gamble at this point.

Bobby Parnell $1.
Parnell's start on Saturday was the signal that the Mets are waiving the white flag and calling it a season in 2009...no matter what their GM, manager or players might say. Parnell's going to need to get worked into shape as a starter, and he's not a good bet this year while that's happening. Long term, he could be OK, but there are a lot of questions right now as to whether or not that will be the case.

Steven Pearce $1. Other bids $1, $1.
Pearce continues to get most of the starts at 1B for the Pirates. This is probably his last shot to be a major league regular, and the results so far are mixed. His OBP is OK, but a home run every 30 AB isn't going to cut it with Pearce's low BA; he'll either need to add a lot of points to his BA or show more power. Pearce is an OK play for now, but if you're contending hopefully you have a better option at CO.

Bronson Arroyo $1. Other bids $1, $1.
Arroyo's owner dumped him last week in favor of George Sherrill. While Arroyo's overall numbers aren't good, he does have a 3.02 ERA and a 1.128 WHIP in his last six starts (41 2/3 IP). Arroyo's stuff is good enough that he's worth riding the hot hand, particularly since he's due the Nationals this week (I know they're hot right now, but the Nationals are still a good match-up for any pitcher on paper).

Tom Gorzelanny $1. Other bids $1, $1.
Gorzelanny's obviously a wild card at this point, but he had a very strong start in his Cubs debut against the Reds last week and should get a shot to stay in the Cubs rotation. He's a two-start starter this week with the Rockies and Pirates on tap and is worth the gamble if he's out in your FA pool.

Alex Romero $1. Other bid $1.
Romero's swinging a hot bat for the D-backs and has a result should keep playing every day or almost every day. He's not much of a source of power or speed, though, so once he goes back to the bench even 2-3 days a week his value plummets.

Justin Lehr $1. Other bid $1.
Lehr was spectacular against the Cubs this past week, but I'm cynical that the 32-year-old journeyman has suddenly figured it out and is going to go all Roy Hobbs on us down the stretch. He gets the Cardinals this week and isn't a good play for the match-up.

Jamie Moyer $1.
The whispers here in Philly is that Moyer is going to lose his rotation spot when Pedro Martinez is called up, which should happen in the near future. He's been all over the map this year and it looks like Father Time may have finally caught up with Moyer. If he does stay in the rotation this week, he gets the Braves.

Tyler Clippard $1.
The former starter has proven to be a solid to strong option out of the pen for the Nationals. He shouldn't be in line for any save opportunities, though.
