A.L. FAAB Log Supplemental: Chris Tillman

It looks like the first of my self-proclaimed "ATM" pitchers that made it up to the Orioles is Chris Tillman (Yeah, that's not going to take off...). If not for Matt Wieters, Tillman would have been the #1 prospect for the O's last year on most lists. Tillman was part of the haul the Orioles got for Erik "Ouch" Bedard. His first major league outing against the Royals was less than impressive. Tillman was leaving the ball up in the zone and seemed to have trouble controlling his pitches in general. On the positive side, you could see why the scouts have been glowing about him so far; he has a deceptive delivery, throws hard, and has a lot of movement on his pitches. I don't think you can FAAB him if you're playing for this year, but I'd go to $7 if you're desperate for the arm. If you're playing for next year, you're probably going to have to go to at least $13-15 to get him. Both these bids might not be enough, but based on what I saw in his MLB debut, I can't recommend going higher right now.

Matusz may be better. Between Tillman, Matusz and Arrieta the O's have three of the top 20 starter prospects. Matusz and Tillman are both in the top 5. Along with Wieters, Adam Jones, Markakis, Reimold, and the take in the Sherrill deal (a nice bonus to the Bedard deal)things are looking up in Baltimore. If we could only get a shortstop.

Eugene makes a good point. The Orioles, for the first time in many years, actually look like a +.500 team within the next two years, barring idiocy. Oh wait, this is the Orioles.

Funny, though keep in mind that's what people were saying about the Rays three years ago while they were quietly building a good team.

Good point Mike. While Tillman and Matusz pitched "well," I was more impressed with their savvy and their approach. This is what GM's mean by "major league ready pitching." Both worked out of jams repeatedly, and showed good mental makeup when things didn't go right. Add that to their stuff, and the Orioles do look promising from a pitching standpoint. Add Wieters, Markakis and Jones to the mix, and, well, barring interference from Angelos, the O's will be good soon.
