FAAB Supplemental

American League
Bartolo Colon
Colon was dominant in his three minor league starts and then OK against the Royals in his Red Sox debut. He should get an opportunity to stick in the rotation, as the conventional wisdom is that Clay Buchholz will probably either get an extended minor league rehab or simply be optioned when he's ready to go. My bid for Colon is $25, which is either conservative or too much depending on your league. My worry about Colon is that it's not the injury that limited him in 2007, it's the fact that he was throwing the ball right down the middle of the plate. Both his fastball and his slider were flat, and he got hit a lot. He's got an easy week this week, with starts against the Mariners and Orioles, but is still a risky pick-up in my mind.

Brandon Wood
Take Two, though not much has changed. There's talk of Chone Figgins returning to the DL, so maybe Wood will finally get an extended shot at 3B. He might also play a little shortstop with Erick Aybar on the shelf. If Wood's available in your league, you could go to $10. It's a speculative pick based on playing time. The Angels are really messing around with Wood here, making me think his stay could once again be short.

National League
Nick Evans
Eyebrows were raised by Evans' debut. The downside is that he's a 22-year-old kid who is most likely up at least a full year too soon. He projects right now as a .240-.250 hitter with 10-15 HR power, which might be nice for a middle infielder but not for a major league outfielders. He should get some playing time with Moises Alou out, but don't expect miracles. My bid is a very tepid $4. I think he might not even be part of the Mets Opening Day plans for 2009, so those in carryover leagues might not want to make the "keeper" bid here.

Clayton Kershaw
There's no doubting Kershaw's stuff, and those who saw him pitch against the Cardinals in his MLB debut today called it "electric". His one weakness right now is his command, though he improved that a great deal at AA this year after struggling with it in 2007 at the same level. He's a risky play, but one worth making in a culture where not many pitchers have been called up yet. $42, which means that you're committing to Kershaw staying in the rotation from here on out.

Ian Stewart
Stewart is up while Garrett Atkins nurses a day-to-day injury, but there's some talk of Stewart moving to left field once Atkins is healthy. I doubt it'll happen, at least this year, as Stewart is green at the position. He was mashing AAA pitching this year, with the most impressive factor being the walks. Six dollars in non-keeper leagues, but in keeper leagues you have to go $17. He will be in the Rockies line-up in 2009 one way or the other, and his Colorado Springs numbers, hitter's venue or no, tell me he very well might be ready now.
