A.L. FAAB Log: May 19, 2008

Jose Arredondo $8.
The Angels called Arredondo up from Triple-A Salt Lake City this past Tuesday, and Mike Scioscia already hasn't been afraid to pitch Arredondo in high leverage situations for the Halos. He's worth watching as a possible future closer. Rotoworld speculates that if the Angels don't sign Francisco Rodriguez, Arredondo could quickly move to the front of the line and get an audition for the closer role in Spring Training. Right now, this is still more of a next year play in Roto.

Rafael Perez $3.
Perez struggled to start the season, but he's back to his effective ways again, minimizing the walks and shaving the ERA/WHIP down as a result. His value as the moment rests in the fact that he's part of the closer committee in Cleveland. Perez might get the odd lefty-lefty save while Joe Borowski is on the mend and Rafael Betancourt recovers from his acute case of the yips.

Michael Aubrey $1. Other bid $1.
Aubrey popped a home run today against the Reds, but I still don't understand the multiple bids: he should get sent back to the minors until the next round of interleague play. He's buried behind Ryan Garko and Travis Hafner on the depth chart, is old (26) for a prospect, and has never been able to stay healthy.

Willie Bloomquist $1.
There's one reason and one reason alone to own Bloomquist: his ability to help out teams in very deep leagues with steals. He's a weak bench option for the Mariners, but this is a team that started the year with one of the worst benches in baseball, so don't sweat Bloomquist losing his job.

Juan Rivera. Claimed by 10th place team.
It's too bad no one wants Rivera: he's not a world beater, but he could probably be a better corner outfield option than what a few major league teams are trotting out there right now. As it stands, Rivera's waiting for the Garret Anderson injury that Anderson's detractors swore would have happened by late April but hasn't.

Alan Embree. Claimed by 6th place team.
It would just stand to reason that Embree's peripherals would be better this year while the ERA/WHIP numbers would be worse. With all of the sexier names in the A's bullpen, Embree will probably get picked up and cut a few times over the course of the year, even though it's possible he could be the fill-in closer again if Street goes down.

Thanks for this. I actually got Arredondo for $1.

Aubrey went for $7. I didn't bid.
