Depth of Position After the Auction

eric wonders:
I am in a 12-team AL-Only 4x4 with 5 OF spots and my free agent pool has three OF-eligible players in it.

How does your league stack up to have 19?
There were only 19 total hitter free agents in my American League. I'm sure if I counted how many OF there were, it would be far less.

One interesting thing about that, though, is that we typically don't count how many free agents there are in the pool at each position: unless, of course, we need a free agent. Then we count the slim pickings, grumble and curse under our collective breath, and often begrudgingly pick up whatever crap happens to be sitting out there.

For the record, there are only four OF in my free agent pool: Brian Anderson, Willie Bloomquist, Robb Quinlan, and Justin Ruggiano. And German Duran means that there are now 20 hitters, not 19, in my A.L.-only free agent pool.

There isn't much gamesmanship when it comes to this stuff though, which is why I don't spend too much time dickering over how many of who or what is out there. When it comes to free agents, I eat when I'm hungry. No, I'm not advocating cannibalizing marginal major leaguers. But I don't belly up to the free agent bar unless I have an injury or an under performer worth cutting.

There are never many hitters available after a one-league Rotisserie auction. What we wind up deciding is whether or not the hitters available are better than the ones we wound up with. As decent as Justin Ruggiano might be, the hope is that our 14th best hitter is better than the best free agent in the thin FA pool.

But if you do have an injury, or did get stuck with $1 scrub who isn't performing, then that's when you open your eyes, look at the free agents out there, and hold your nose in disgust.

Here's hoping that you don't have to hold your nose this month.

As an English teacher once wrote on my friend's term paper, "I'd rather have nothing than this."

I've had an injured catcher (Navarro) active for the last two weeks because the replacements available were so crappy. Sometimes it's best not to bother with a replacement when the pool is that thin.

Duran drew three FAAB bids, and now he qualifies in the OF! Read at BP that Duran was told he would be the first recalled by the Rangers front office.

I read/heard something about John Mayberry, Jr being on the fast track to be recalled later this summer. I want to say it came from Rangers' front office type on MLB Homeplate on XM Radio.
